10 Tips for Aspiring Fashion Designers from a Project Runway Alum

Hey there, future fashion icons! I’m so excited to share some insights I’ve picked up over my years in the fashion industry. From starting The House of Perna with just $4,000 in a tiny New York City apartment to surviving a FedEx fire that wiped out a year’s worth of work, I’ve learned a thing or two about navigating this crazy, colorful world of fashion. If you’re just starting out, here are my top 10 tips to help you on your journey.

1. Start Small and Dream Big

You don’t need a massive budget or a fancy studio to start. I began my brand on my kitchen table. Focus on your vision, take small steps, and watch how it grows over time. Remember, every big brand started somewhere small.

2. Find Your Unique Voice

The fashion world is full of trends, but the real magic happens when you create something that is uniquely yours. Don’t be afraid to embrace your quirks, bold colors, or maximalist style. Your individuality is your greatest asset.

3. Learn the Business Side

Fashion isn’t just about designing beautiful clothes; it’s also about running a successful business. Take the time to learn about marketing, sales, and production logistics. These skills will help you turn your passion into a sustainable career.

4. Network, Network, Network

Connections are everything in this industry. Attend events, reach out to mentors, and build relationships with other designers, buyers, and stylists. You never know who might help open the next door for you.

5. Be Willing to Hustle

This industry can be glamorous, but it’s also a grind. There will be long nights, tight deadlines, and plenty of challenges. Resilience and hard work will carry you through the tough times.

6. Seek Feedback and Stay Humble

Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback—from mentors, peers, or even customers. Constructive criticism will help you grow as a designer and refine your craft.

7. Give Back and Lift Others Up

The fashion world can be competitive, but I believe in breaking the cycle of tearing others down. Mentor younger designers, collaborate with peers, and build a community that uplifts each other. Kindness goes a long way.

8. Stay True to Your Values

For me, ethical production and creating small-batch, custom designs are non-negotiable. Whatever your values are, stick to them. They’ll guide your brand and attract the right customers who believe in what you stand for.

9. Embrace the Journey—Success and Struggles

The highs are incredible—opening a flagship store, seeing your designs come to life—but the struggles are just as real. Share your journey authentically; it’s what makes you relatable and inspiring to others.

10. Never Stop Learning

Whether it’s mastering a new technique, understanding emerging trends, or diving into the latest in digital marketing, stay curious and keep learning. The fashion world is always evolving, and staying adaptable will keep you ahead of the curve.

Starting out in fashion is an adventure, and I’m rooting for you every step of the way! Remember, your creativity and passion are what the world needs. Keep dreaming big, working hard, and staying true to yourself. You’ve got this, and I can’t wait to see what you create!
